Mount Agung towers majestically overmost
of the landscaped of Eastern and Northern Karangasem. At its foot lies
the largest temple of Bali, the Pura Besakih. A cosmic temple, Besakih
symbolizes the male principle, while the Batur symbolizes its female
complementary. | |
| |
| |
The holiest temple in Bali, on the slopes
of the great Gunung Agung, Besakih is a complex of about 30 temples, the main
one being Pura Penataran Agung, which has a large threeseated throne,
a shrine to Brahma, Wisnu and Siwa, the holy trinity. Penataran Agung
is the temple of the whole "world" |
| "Cak, cak,
cak" The obsessive sound of a choir from beyond the dust of ages
suddenly rises between the lofty trees They start dancing to the rhythmic
sound of their own odd voices, their hands raised to the sky and
body shaking in unison. That is the unique Kecak, the most popular of
all Balinese dances. | |
